When you're an independent professional, and even when you're not, time management is always a challenge. Now, I'm a paper calendar person. I think the act of writing something down helps it stick in my brain, and I need to see chunks of time available or unavailable. I've tried iCal and the calendar on my phone and for whatever reason, it just doesn't work for me.
So, paper calendars/planners it is for me. But I can't ever seem to find just the right one. I've spent many hours combing through office supply stores, Franklin Covey stores, bookstores and online looking for the perfect planner. There always seems to be too much or not enough there. Or I don't like the way it's organized. Let's face it I am REALLY picky.
Being a graphic designer, I was going to design my own. It's a tedious process and printing isn't cheap. I was planning this out, getting print bids and moving forward when completely out of the blue, I got something in the mail from a company called Planner Pads out of Omaha, Nebraska. I say out of the blue because the mailing label used a version of my name that is usually on random catalogs and junk mail. It was just one of those things when it's such a coincidence that you can't help but check it out.
What I found was the closest I have EVER come to a perfect planner. It not only had the week on a 2-page spread and the days broken out into hours, but it combined this with another separate sheet of paper I was using -- my Weekly Action Plan.
They use what they call a "funnel system" to get your butt organized. You list your projects across the top, everything you have to do broken out by day under that, and then the hourly breakdowns under that. Talk about get 'er done!
I will begin using this planner full time next week. I'll let you know how it goes!!
